2. Antioxidant Powerhouse

Broccoli is a superhero in the antioxidant world. It contains lots of flavonoids, which fight harmful free radicals and slow down the aging process. (Be sure to check the five health benefits of coffee and the five health benefits of matcha for easy drinkable sources of antioxidants).

3. Cancer-Fighting Properties

The ultimate source of sulforaphane, a potent anticancer compound. Unlike other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli surpasses them all in sulforaphane content. However, cooking our super green can destroy the enzyme needed to convert its precursor into sulforaphane because it’s not heat resistant.

To overcome this, chop our green friend at least 30 minutes before cooking to allow the enzyme to do its magic, or add mustard seed after cooking since it contains the necessary enzyme.

Please note that you absorb a significantly higher amount of sulforaphane from consuming broccoli compared to sulforaphane supplements.

Here’s how the anti-cancer nutrient sulforaphane gets destroyed and what you can do to counter it.

4. Digestive Health Support

A fiber-rich vegetable, great for your digestion. It regulates bowel movements, keeps you fuller for longer, and supports a healthy gut by feeding your friendly gut microbes.

5. Heart-Healthy Benefits

Fiber, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds, found in the hulk of the vegetable kingdom, promote heart health. They lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

6. Vision Boosting

Broccoli contains two special antioxidants called lutein and zeaxanthin which are vital for healthy vision. They protect your eyes from damage and the degeneration that naturally occurs as we age.

Bottom line

Next time you eat broccoli, remember to chop it well ahead of cooking. Thanks for reading. Until next time, stay healthy, stay happy, and keep exploring the power of nature’s bounty.
